Mindless musings on my thoughts, experiences, and hopes.

Wow, almost 2 weeks since my last post. I was out and about last weekend for Easter with my girlfriend who came into town. We went to Big Sur last Saturday and it was absolutely beautiful. Big scenery, monstrous cliffs overlooking the the Pacific Ocean, and wildflowers growing all over. We went to Julia Pfeifer Burns Park and walked to this overlook of a cove with a waterfall dropping on to the beach and into the ocean. The water was such a vibrant blue and the sun was shimmering on the water, it was quite a spectacular view. Sunday we went to mass at San Carlos Cathedral, my temporary church while I'm here. It's a Spanish Mission church dating from the 1770s and is gorgeous in it's architecture and decor. Italians are everywhere here and many go to the church, which I constantly joked about with my girlfriend since she's Italian. Once she saw it for herself, she laughed at how they all had the same hair, glasses, and fashion as her grandma. Very funny stuff. Sunday afternoon, my Sudanes teacher invited us over for authentic homemade Arabic food. We ate so much and it was much better than the normal Arab food you get at the restaurants like hummus and tabouli. I think my girlfriend liked the food; heck even I liked it and I'm not a big fan of Arabic food. Unfortunately, she headed back home on Monday, but I'm headed out there in May and she's coming back here in June. And I should be home for good soon enough.

Well I didn't succeed in yesterday's to-do list, so yesterday's to-do is today's to-do. I got sidetracked when I went to my room and my roommate was entertaining a lady and I didn't want to interrupt so I went to a neighboring building and hung out with some buds. Ended watching Red Dragon, which scared the crap out of me. I don't handle scary movies very well. After that wound up getting sucked into Lawrence of Arabia, which is a pretty amazing movie, but I felt like I was watching it in real time because the the movie was so long. I lost track, maybe 5 hours or so. Mass at church today was very pretty and crowded. The Chreasters were (Christmas/Easter), which is great and next week will be even more crowded, but that's good too. The Cathedral I go to is actually chapel size, in Old Spanish mission architecture. I will definitely miss the place when I leave here.

Geez, the weather has crapped out this weekend...breezy with rain every now and then. I drank way too much last night and had a good headache this morning. And I slept terrible waking up at 6am. I tried to sleep for a bit more and gave up at 8:30am. But the bay was real pretty yesterday with dolphins and sea lions all over the place. The place I go is right on the water and they make pretty decent margaritas, and even better when it's happy hour. Then we moved off to Bullwackers, great name, which has a great outdoor patio with fireplaces and heaters to kick back around and listen to live music. The singer is their regular and is actually the husband of one girls in our Company. He's pretty good and has a great attitude. Today's list: Make copies of number drills and practice numbers, study vocabulary, and do homework. Maybe catch a movie tonight. Wouldn't mind seeing anger management.

Not a whole heck of a lot going on. Just checking in. Began Capsule 12 (capsule? Unit, segment, whatever) out of a total of 15 capsules. So I test on 12 at the end of the month, then 13 end of May, 14 at end of June, 15 (you guessed it) end of July. Then I spend all of August reviewing the past 1 1/4 years to take the comp/proficiency tests at the beginning of September. The hopefully I'm graduating. My only pitfall are numbers. I can't write the number drills fast enough to pass so far and I think I may have problems passing the final numbers test, which is the only one that counts. I'm practicing, but need to practice more. Now this is humbling because I'm one of the better students in listening and reading, but one of the worst if not the worst at numbers. I have no explanation, but it's definitely my achilles.

Alright, made it through another test in Arabic. Only 4 more to go and then a month to prepare for my profiency exams and then it's graduation on Sept. 11, hopefully. So, I think I'm over the hump and I'm ready to dig in to make sure that I graduate on time. Other than that I'm really up to nothing else, a little reading, a little bit of movie watching, and a lot of talking to my girlfriend. I can't wait till I can talk to her face to face daily and not over the phone. She's absolutely amazing and even more so to put up with me being 3,000 miles away while I study. We see each other at least once a month and she's visiting for Easter, but I'll be glad to get back home once it's all done where I can see her, family, and friends all the time. Well, it looks like Monterey weather is starting to get better again, though it's still too chilly for me here. I need the east coast humidity! I went to Carmel Beach yesterday and hung out with Pebble Beach off in the distance; a very beautiful sight.
